The presidential challenge is in its final round: Trump raises walls, Clinton reviews Obama’s legacy.

The United States’ presidential elections in November will have a huge impact on the country’s role in the world for decades. Candidates trot out this claim every election cycle in order to attract voters’ attention and lend importance to what they are doing. But this time, it is actually true. As Zalmay Khalilzad, US ambassador to Afghanistan under George W. Bush and former envoy to Iraq and the UN, explained:“The United States is in a fragile phase of introspection. After its international overextension at the time of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the current conflict in Syria that has refuelled terrorism, and the economic crisis predominantly affecting the middle class, Americans have turned inward and are reflecting on the role they want to play in the world. It is a debate that has divided us Republicans – as is clear from the reactions to the presidential candidacy of Donald Trump – but the Democrats too, illustrated by the debates between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. I hope that at the end of the elections, a unified choice emerges who can overcome these differences and give the United States a new, commonly shared international vision”.
