The Kerch Strait Bridge is a metaphor for Putin’s Russia

Illegally annexed Crimea will soon be physically linked to Russia. The bridge over the Kerch Strait is almost reality. A $4.5 billion project, which is also a metaphor for Putin’s Russia.

Powerful and decisive, mighty and capable of grandiose works, like conquering a land in a few hours without a shot, or building a 19 km bridge that everyone say is impossible.

Impossible due to its cost: but Putin has found the money, taking it from the pension fund of employes of Russian railroads. Time will tell.

Impossible for engineering reasons, due to the strong marine streams and sandy and mobile seabed: but Putin has given the job to his childhood friend, billioner Arkady Rotenberg, who has piled up billions of dollars millions with contracts for The Sochi Olympics. And all the expertise and authorizations came smooth. Time will tell.

Impossible for time it would need to be built: an original project hypothesis existed already since 1944. But Putin, once annexed Crimea, said that the bridge construction was a “historical mission” and that 2018 deadline will be respected, at any cost. Time will tell.

The message is clear: when Putin has an idea, the world can take it for granted. The rest of the world can impose sanctions, isolate the econoy, condemn its policy. Russia goes on its way: a way that leads straight to Crimea.
