Bolstering the EU is one of the mainstays of Martin Schulz’s programme but not without first tackling the renovation of Germany’s internal social policies.
On 9 May 2017 (a bank holiday in Europe), Martin Schulz, a candidate for the German chancellery, was in Verdun at the site where 300,000 German and French soldiers fought and killed each other 101 years ago. Schulz’s visit had been organised when he was still the president of the European Parliament, but took on an even greater significance now that the secretary of the Social Democratic Party is attempting to oust Angela Merkel, the woman who Foreign Policy has termed ‘The forever Chancellor’.
