The new borders of the Kingdom

The borders between Great Britain and Europe were there before and still remain after Brexit. But the UK and London
could turn into a new Singapore.

The British referendum to leave the EU is much more than a vote of no confidence in Europe.
It is also an unmistakable sign of fear and a rejection of globalisation, i.e. the tendency towards commercial, financial and cultural openness, of which the EU has been one of the most concrete and successful manifestations in recent history. The
precondition for and ultimate goal of this phenomenon is a gradual dismantling of all kinds of borders, be
they customs rates on goods, regulatory barriers to services and assets or material borders restricting the free movement of persons. If even Great Britain (traditionally one of the most liberal and globalised countries in the world) is voting against this, we can expect new borders to emerge. 

The leaders of the British campaign to leave the EU primarily leveraged the alleged benefits that the country would derive from resuming greater control of its borders. Pictures showing Syrian refugees waiting in line to escape war by entering Europe were used to create the impression of an imminent invasion of Great Britain. In reality, only a few migrants have crossed the English Channel. This is due to the country’s geography and decision to opt out of the Schengen area, Europe’s visa-free travel area.
As frequent travellers know, passengers are subject to border control checks on trains running from Paris to London that have been lifted for those travelling from Paris to Brussels or Frankfurt.
