CHINA – Soft power in Africa
Beijing began winning the hearts and minds of African leaders with big ticket infrastructure contracts delivered on time and at relatively low cost in return for access to domestic resources. Now China’s foray into Africa has reached a new
landmark: the Red Army has deployed its troops for the first time on the continent as part of the blue-helmeted UN
forces in South Sudan. The number of soldiers deployed is small compared to the efforts of the United States or
India, but the significance of Chinese troops setting up a base in Africa is huge.
