MEXICO – Appeal to boycott Trump’s anti-immigration wall

During the US election campaign, Donald Trump clarified that what once appeared to be a friendly relationship with the Clinton family was actually a business relationship, and therefore there was nothing personal in their electoral fight. The Republican candidate utilised a classic mafia saying, “Business is business, it’s not personal.” Now it appears that Mexico is taking some of that advice on board as it has asked domestic companies to “examine their conscience” and to boycott offers to build Trump’s wall on the border between the two countries. It’s a big ask to Mexican companies, especially at a time when the economy is not doing well, partly due to Trump’s victory. At the moment, there are hundreds of Mexican companies who have expressed interest in building the wall. If they pull out, it would be an embarrassing blow to the new US president. The first of many? Time will tell.
