“It does not often occur, especially in the Balkans, that one nation resolves so highly complex questions by peaceful means”, said the former Prime Minister Milo Đukanovic at the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Montenegro’s independence. On 21 May 2006, Montenegro’s independence was restored for the fifth time in the millennial history of its statehood. Throughout the five-centuries-long Ottoman siege and the great historical turmoil of two World Wars, Montenegro proved itself to be a bold defender of its national boundaries, but the country was always too small to preserve its independence.
