Brazil is going through its toughest period time since the early 90s. Recurring words are recession, political crisis, coup. What’s going on?
Three long-running crises are merging, with no glimpse of a solution in the short-medium term.

The resulting whirlwind is hitting the economy and the stratification of society and got the system stuck. The crises of the political system, of the economy and of the PT, the governing Workers’ Party, are feeding off each other. The most striking example is the President’s impeachment on grounds of a formal case, political and economic interests and the quality and the personal interests of the members of Parliament.
Should the Senate confirm the impeachment on May 11, the power will pass to the vice president, Michel Temer, for six months. After that, there could be early elections in 2017 or the regular ones in 2018.
The chaotic way in which the impeachment process was conducted illustrates the deep crisis of Brazilian institutions, where the executive power feels hostage of the legislative one. “On the day the House committee approved the eligibility of the impeachment, at times it was hard to tell what kind of a quarrel was going on, if a football or a partisan one,” said José de Souza Martins, a sociologist and author of O PT, das Lutas sociais ao PT do poder (The Workers Party – From Social Struggles to the Ruling PT). “We are voting on this critical issue with the same temporary scope of World Cups — once they are over, they are over.”
