The Trumpian Empire


The checks and balances are fit for purpose in domestic politics, less so in foreign relations. The real problem is the rift between the parties.

 On 14 November, while Donald Trump was completing his trip to Asia, a visit aimed primarily at putting pressure on North Korea, the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations did something it had not done for 41 years: it held a congressional hearing to discuss changes to the law that gives the American president the absolute authority to use nuclear weapons.
