Twixt dream and reality

Xi Jinping has a grand idea: the “Chinese Dream”. In March, once the National Congress of the People had confirmed his appointment as head of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi passionately addressed the members of the assembly advocating the rebirth of the Chinese nation.

“China Dream” is generally understood as China’s desire to regain its greatness and to return to its rightful place on the world stage.

If you look at some statistics, this dream doesn’t seem too far-fetched. China now stands as the second largest economy in the world, just after the United States and the world’s fastest-growing major economy. And since the start of the economic reforms three decades ago, as many as 600 million people have been lifted out of poverty, an unprecedented feat in human history.
