The share of the manufacturing industry in Europe has fallen from 30% in 1970 to 18% in 2001. In the same period the share of services has risen from 52 to 70%. No one dares to speak about “deindustrialisation”, but this new trend certainly poses some strategic problems, in both the Union and individual countries also as a result of the Enlargement.
