Germany is located in Central Europe, covering an area of 357,022 km², making it the seventh-largest country in Europe. With a population of around 83 million people (as of January 1, 2023), Germany is the most populous country in the European Union. The capital, Berlin, has 3.7 million inhabitants, representing 4.4% of the total population, while metropolitan areas like Munich and Hamburg are also significant.

Forecasts
For 2024, economic growth of 2.0% is expected, supported by an increase in domestic demand and strategic investment policies. The inflation rate is expected to decrease to 3.2% in 2024 and further in 2025, thanks to more stable fiscal and monetary policies. The German economy will continue to benefit from its leadership in manufacturing and technology but will face challenges related to an aging population and the energy transition toward renewable sources.
Country Risk
Germany has a very low country risk, with a stable political system and a strong economy. However, geopolitical tensions in Europe and economic challenges related to the energy transition could negatively affect long-term stability.
Foreign Direct Investments
In 2022, Germany attracted significant FDI, particularly in the technology, automotive, and healthcare sectors. The main investors are the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. Germany is an attractive investment hub, particularly in green and digital technologies, due to favorable policies and a highly skilled labor market.
Geopolitical Analysis
Germany plays a crucial role in European and global geopolitics, influenced by its geographical position, economic power, and political leadership within the European Union (EU).
Role in the European Union
As a founding member of the EU and the Eurozone, Germany is a central actor in the European integration process. Its economy is highly interconnected with other member states, making it a pillar of the continent’s economic stability. Berlin advocates for austerity policies during economic crises but has also shown openness to common fiscal policies, especially during the COVID-19 crisis and the war in Ukraine. Germany positions itself as a mediator between the various stances of member states, striving to maintain European unity even in times of tension, such as discussions on migration and security.
Transatlantic Relations and NATO
Germany has strong ties with the United States and NATO allies, being one of the main contributors to the Alliance’s military forces. However, it has also sought to develop a more autonomous defense policy, particularly in response to growing tensions with Russia. Germany has increased its defense budget, positioning itself as a key partner in European defense integration and collective security. Berlin has also supported NATO-EU cooperation, emphasizing the importance of an integrated security strategy.
Relations with Asia and the World
Germany is expanding its economic and diplomatic relations with Asian countries, particularly China, one of its main trading partners. However, there are growing concerns about economic dependence on China and the need to diversify trade relations. Germany is also seeking to strengthen ties with countries in Africa and the Middle East, recognizing the importance of new strategic alliances to address global challenges.
Post-COVID Geopolitical Challenges and Impact of the Ukraine War
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of global supply chains and pushed Germany to diversify its sources of supply and strengthen local production. The Ukraine war has had a direct impact on Germany’s energy security, forcing the country to reduce its dependence on Russian gas and seek alternative energy sources. Berlin has also taken a stance in favor of Ukraine, providing military and humanitarian support and backing sanctions against Russia.
Migration Policy and Security
Germany has maintained relatively open migration policies, especially towards refugees, but has faced internal tensions related to integration and security. Despite risks associated with terrorism, Germany is considered a safe country with a low crime rate. However, growing radicalization and social tensions related to immigration represent a significant challenge for the government.
