UN’s calls to the International community to resettle refugees from Syria largely failed. “We are witnessing the worst refugee crisis of our era, with millions of women, men and children struggling to survive amidst brutal wars, networks of people traffickers and governments who pursue selfish political interests instead of showing basic human compassion,” said Salil Shetty, Amnesty International’s Secretary General. In 2014 and the first months of 2015, Syrians represent the largest number of people who tried to cross the Mediterranean sea to arrive to South Europe. Many refugees have been victims of abuses and discrimination in the host countries.
While in Africa the situation is not better : in sub-Saharian Africa 3 million refugees are estimated. In 2013, less than 15 thousand people coming from Africa were resettled. In 2013, it is estimated that 550 thousand people became refugees in South Sudan and they are mostly in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Sudan. In 2014, 3,500 people died attempting to cross the Mediterranean. In April 2015, more than 1 thousand people died in only ten days in the Mediterranean. As in 31 May 1865, people from North Africa lost their lives, in the same period in 2014 people who died in the sea were 425. All this is coincided with Italy and EU decision to stop Mare Nostrum research and rescue operation, that has been succeeded by Triton, with a limited area of action and fewer vessels.
After recent tragedies, at the end of April EU leaders decided to increase funds and the and the area of action of the Triton operation .
Refugees allocation between member states
After the Home Affairs Council , Angelino Alfano , Italian Home Affairs Minister, said there have been steps in the refugees allocation and the obligation of quota between the member states and also to reconsider the Dublin regulation. But all this will be decided by the 28 EU leaders in the summit on 25th and 26th June. While the Minister for the interior of Latvia Rihards Kozlovskis said “Today a common understanding was reached among delegations that we need to provide support to those frontline member states who are facing the greatest migratory pressure. At the same time it must be recognized that different views continue to exist about the details of the Commission’s proposals for relocation of asylum seekers”.
