New supersonic combat drones will leave fighter pilots jobless.

Drones are one of the most important technological revolutions now underway. In the last decade, numerous applications have emerged: they act as camera platforms, monitor automobile traffic, transport and deliver merchandise, all beyond their wellknown military uses.

Defence ministries in most industrialised nations have begun studying how to expand the use of aerial robots in order to update obsolete equipment and to create greater operational efficiency, significantly reducing the long term cost involved in employing human resources.

As the design of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has evolved, a new kind of drone has emerged: the so-called Dogfighter. These fast and highly manoeuvrable air combat drones, fitted with a technology that makes them perfectly suited for an active role in war scenarios on an intercontinental level, are likely to occupy the ‘niche’ currently filled by fighter planes.
