Emigration moves upmarket From Taipei to Milan, by way of Toronto

Building a career on five languages and… a hamburger.

Sitting in a coffee bar in the centre of Milan, near the offices of Dagong Europe, Sidney Shin-Yi Dung orders a decaf cappuccino in perfect Italian.

A young manager and mother of Theo, a child of two, she knows what she likes – and besides the Mandarin of her Taiwanese birthplace, she speaks English, Japanese, French and Italian.

But other things besides languages have set her to travelling the world: Art, love and… a hamburger.

“Art, yes. After graduation going abroad for a Masters is very normal for young people in Taiwan. I chose to go to Canada because the University of Toronto, besides an MBA in marketing, also offered a diploma in Art. That’s a passion I inherited from my maternal uncle, one of our country’s most famous painters.”
