Germany remembers, and fears, the mark of 1923

Who does not remember the past is condemned to repeat it. But which past?

Geschichtsbewusstseini, or historical awareness, is an important, even crucial, word for understanding presentday Germany. Following the horrors perpetrated during the Nazi era, this awareness (and historical memory) has been indispensable to Germany’s return to the Table of Nations, an achievement that came only after difficult and painful analysis of the past.

This year marks a century since the outbreak of WWI and, paradoxically, now more than ever that past seems to be dangerously resurfacing, accelerated by the crisis of the euro and the European economy. Which in turn have caused a widening rift between the relatively prosperous Germany and the Mediterranean countries, currently struggling with excessive debt and growing disagreement over what measures to adopt to tackle their economic problems.
