More bucks for your bang

Counter-terrorism today is nearly as big as the pharmaceutical sector.

Britain can fairly claim to be the birthplace of counter-terrorism. The world’s first-ever counter-terrorism unit was set up by the London Metropolitan Police in 1883 in response to the activities of militant Irish nationalists.

In more recent years the UK has remained at the forefront of counter-terror legislation and enforcement, along with the United States and Israel. Yet as the business of counter-terrorism has grown to meet the increase in perceived risk in the years since 9/11, the UK’s share of that commerce has not kept pace. The country now has a mere 4.2% of a global market that is estimated to be worth over $700 billion, not far off the size of the massive pharmaceuticals industry.
