US – Obama: no lame duck

No US president wants to be a lame duck, but that is what they are at the end of their last term in office. With one foot out the door of the White House and the spotlight focused on those running to take over his position, however, Barack Obama appears to have regained his 2008 magic.

America’s first black president is determined to leave a lasting legacy. Despite attempts by his congressional opponents to dismantle his major reforms, among many other achievements, Obamacare has been enshrined into law, a nuclear peace agreement with Iran has been secured and diplomatic ties with Cuba have been restored. So what’s left? New gun-control laws, closing Guantanamo prison, better access to education … the list is long. The US president works best under the radar, as he did when capturing Osama bin Laden. His last days might well end up being his best.
