Angela Merkel has won a fourth term, but AfD’s election to the Bundestag casts a shadow over the Iron Chancellor’s last hurrah.

Angela Merkel has made it. At the end of September, she won a national election for the fourth time running. It was an historic event. A chancellor emerging once again as the strongest candidate after 12 years in office is something the Federal Republic of Germany has seldom seen. And her accomplishment comes at a time in which the tenures of government leaders across Europe are becoming ever shorter. Merkel managed to succeed in spite of the general European trend and the growing phenomenon of right-wing populism. One is almost tempted to speak of Merkel having achieved an historic triumph.
