The electoral law was passed, voters go to the polls in 2018. But the outcome is uncertain. Ultimately, there’s always the current government as a fall back.

The current Italian legislation period has seen the election of two heads of state (Giorgio Napolitano and Sergio Mattarella), a parliamentary majority granted to three different prime ministers (Gianni Letta, Matteo Renzi and Paolo Gentiloni), a radical revision of the Constitution voted by Parliament (and then rejected by the electorate in a referendum) and the approval of two electoral laws (in response to two rulings by the Constitutional Court, which for the first time made pronouncements on voting instruments and techniques). Italy is now preparing to vote once again in the upcoming general elections in 2018, uncertain whether the electoral result will enable the formation of a stable government that can promote effective policies.
