A hopeless triangle

The Berlin-Washington-Moscow axis is creaking. Asturdier European shield in German hands is needed to keep everyone at a safe distance.

Nothing in the world is more intricate these days than the strategic game being played by Berlin, Moscow and Washington. The triangle would already be complicated enough if the United States were continuing to champion its traditional Atlanticist approach, but Donald Trump’s presidency, with all its inconsistencies, has reshuffled the deck. The geopolitical dynamics of this triangle must therefore be examined in all of their complexity, focusing in particular on two crucial points of instability: the shifting transatlantic relations between Germany and the United States, and the historical ambivalence of Russian-German relations.
