What is clear instead is that the Turkish Prime Minister has created the greatest rift in the country since the Republic was founded in the 1920s.
His ambition was to go down in history as the second Atatürk. The reality is that he now risks becoming the most controversial – if so far most successful – leader throughout the entire Middle East. Europe instead is not much spoken about anymore beyond the Bosphorus.
For his part, Erdogan maintains his popularity across the vast plains of central Anatolia, among the country’s more conservative business people and with those voters who have yet to find a compelling political alternative.
Yet even with the leader so clearly vulnerable, the opposition has still been unable to come up with a programme that can effectively contrast Erdogan’s undeniably successful recipe: a blend of relative liberalism and laissez- faire economics on which he has built his success but that may now be beginning to crumble.
