Among the hundreds of speeches made by the candidate for prime minister of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, Hindu conservative party), Narendra Modi, during the electoral campaign for the national elections in 2014, one episode has gone down in the annals of Modism. It took place in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh (UP), a stronghold of ultra-Hinduism and a state where the BJP had always struggled until 2014.
