Emerging Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish designers are presenting their proposals in the coastal town of Dún Laoghaire (South of Dublin), from October 26th to November 17th.
The exhibition ‘Nordic Now’, in Georges Street Lower, is organized by the ‘LexIcon’ and ‘Nordic Makers’. Hunting & Narud (Norway), Leena Kouhia (Finland), Kajsa Willner (Sweden) are experimenting with ‘green’ materials that can be used in craftwork.
On October 26th the seminar ‘Nordic Now: Designing Sustainably and Sustaining Design’ took place, with the participation of Elizabeth Hatz (‘Royal Institute of Technology’ in Stockholm), Knut Bang (‘Oslo’s Design and Architecture Centre’), Troels Degn (‘Danish Design School KADK’) and of the Finnish designer Ilkka Suppanen.
The seminar is the result of a collaboration between the Danish, Finnish and Norwegian Embassies and of Sweden, with the support of the ‘Design and Crafts Council of Ireland’ and the ‘National College of Art and Design’. ‘Nordic Makers’ will host informal events: every Thursday evening there will be a debate about the work of a designer coming from a Scandinavian country (other events will take place on 3th, 10th and 17th November). The Nordic Embassies and the ‘Nordic Culture Fund’ supported the exhibition, curated by ‘Nordic Makers’ and ‘Aideen McCole’, in collaboration with the ‘Design and Crafts Council of Ireland’ and the ‘National College of Art and Design’.
At ‘Nordic Makers’ we work to share the best of Nordic design and craftsmanship with the Irish public – said Louise Wehye Funder (‘Nordic Makers’) – we are excited to partner with the Nordic embassies to expand the offer so to include exhibitions and events’.The Danish ambassador to Ireland, Carsten Søndergaard added that, while much can be learned from the Nordic with regard to the development and the promotion of design, it is also true that ‘now that the Irish design is more visible than ever, dialogue will help designers in both regions’. The exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10,00 to 6,00 (until November 17th).
