Quo Vadis Polska?


The Polish elections in October are of great importance, even for Europe.

May’s presidential elections and the victory of the ultranationalist leader Andrzej Duda over the pro-European Bronislaw Komorowski came as a great surprise. The result was unexpected because of Duda’s lack of political experience – he is a relatively unknown political figure in the Law and Justice Party. Also surprising was the youth vote: 60% of voters ages 18- 29 chose Duda. And finally, considering Poland’s role in Europe, why did one of the youngest member states, a beneficiary of European funds with an economy still growing despite the crisis, make such a choice? It’s a decision that will undoubtedly have consequences for Warsaw’s foreign policy and its positions on the main European dossiers, notably Russia and the Ukrainian crisis.
