The new faces in power

On 18 September, there will be elections for the new Duma. Even Crimea will vote. All parties have put forward new and young candidates.

On 18 September, Russia will go to the polls to elect the members of the Duma, the
Russian parliament. 111 million voters will select 450 deputies, and some new features will be introduced.
For the first time, Crimea will be electing four of its own representatives to the Duma. There will also be a return to the proportional representation system, with 225 seats available for the candidates of parties on federal lists in each electoral district and a threshold that has been lowered from 7% to 5%.

The remaining 225 candidates will be elected in
individual contests. Had the threshold remained at 7%, the outcome would have been more predictable, namely, the re-election of the largest parties, the “four elephants”, to the Russian Duma: President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia Party, the Communist Party, the Liberal Democratic Party and the Just Russia Party.
