Jobs are not disappearing, but employment does not stand still for a second. Technology, and particularly digital technology, is being adopted more quickly than any new model of training and personal development. For centuries, the cycle of the substitution of human work by machines has been an intergenerational affair. The nature of work
and its relationship to technology changed slowly, usually over the span of time between parent and child. The child had time for an apprenticeship or, in recent decades, to learn a trade in a professional setting or obtain a formal education at a university. But with the acceleration driven by digital technology, the cycle of substitution has become intragenerational, and it continues to accelerate.
