DOSSIER – Globalisation: truth and fiction

When all the planet’s inhabitants use the same means of communication and have potential access to the same verifiable information, this generates an almost consistent global demand where any differentiation is ultimately predictable.

A worldwide and all-inclusive system has now been put in place capable of pinpointing this demand and satisfying it. Vast online bazaars – Amazon in the US and Alibaba in China – offer all kinds of goods, both tangible and intangible, at competitive prices. They also offer innovative and simple in-house payment platforms.

Almost 400 million people are involved in international electronic trade and the volume of goods exchanged globally will keep growing in 2017. Asia is the driving force behind this growth, and the geopolitical impact of all this is significant and begs to be understood and managed at a political level.
