At SAP, a global software giant, they are quick to point out that this is no charity operation. A recent study shows that autistics, provided they are not suffering from any cognitive deficit, are ten times more efficient when testing software than so called ‘neuro-typical’ subjects. “These employees can guarantee a quite considerable competitive advantage if hired as programmers or software testers”, explains SAP spokesperson Alexandra Seele. “We’ve seen a sharp rise in productivity in our office in India, where we’ve already set up a program specifically designed to introduce autistic people into the work force”.
