The whole world condemned the terrorist attack at the heart of the French and European values. The Muslim community of Russia expressed its condemnation as well. But the statement posted on the website suggests there has been a “provocation”. Meanwhile, the Russian nationalists believe in the US-Israeli conspiracy.
On the website of the Council of Muftis of Russia appeared yesterday a statement of condemnation of the attack at Charlie Hebdo. The same statement, however, suggested a provocative behavior of the cartoonists. “The community of Muslims of Russia angrily condemns the terrorist attack in Paris in which unknown persons killed and injured journalists of Charlie Hebdo, which in recent years has published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed. We express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims. We are in mourning for the dead and pray for the life of the wounded. We call on Muslims to remain calm. “But a few lines below states that “perhaps in our world the sin of provocation is no less serious than the sin committed by those who succumb to the provocation.”
“An insult to the faithfull”
The message seems clear. The killers who shot have committed sin, as well as a heinous crime, but satirists who published the cartoons are not without guilt. Moreover, the murderous attack could eventually have been avoided if the cartoonists had stopped teasing the Prophet. The statement goes on saying that “The insult to the feelings of the faightful is unacceptable. We appeal to everyone who has access to mass media to remember about internal censorship, about respecting the feelings of people from another culture”, while stating that “terrorism has no justification. We remind the authors of this act – the instigators and the shooters – that according to the admonition of the Supreme Creator, imprinted in the Holy Quran, who brings death, deserves the punishment of Allah.”
The Council of Muftis of Russia is the body that represents all Muslims of the Federation. It is responsible for coordinating religious activities, promoting Islamic education and the construction of mosques. It was founded in 1996 and is chaired by Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin, spiritual leader of the faithful. There are more than 15 million Muslims in Russia, something like 10% of the population.
The position of Mufti does nothing but throw an element of confusion in a Muslim world that condemned unanimously and without reservation the massacre of Paris.
The usual conspiracy
Someone else loves to make confusion in Russia about the attack. Leonid Ivashov, president of the International Center of Geopolitical Analysis and member of the Izborsky Club, as well as friend of the controversial ideologist Alexander Dugin, said that Muslims have nothing to do with the attacks, that has been organized by Americans and Israelis instead. “Most likely the operation was planned in the United States with the help of the secret services of Israel to destroy the Islamic culture,” he wrote in an article on Islamnews.ru. “Europe is today for several reasons is against Israel. Also because with the actions in the Middle East together with its US allies it is causing the flow of refugees in Europe. Even the recognition of Palestine is seen as an attack on the independence of the United States and Israel.” I wonder what Charb, the director of Charlie Hebdo, would have drawn if he had heard the words of Ivashov.
